2008-2009 Domestic European Leagues

Manchester United made it three English Premierships in a row while Internazionale Milan, FC Porto, and Celtic Glasgow all made it four in a row in their respective leagues. Standard Liege won their second in a row in Belgium. Girondins Bordeaux broke Olympique Lyon's seven French championship streak, while AZ '67 Alkmaar prevented one of the big three Dutch teams from winning the championship, as they had done every year since 1981. Meanwhile, VfL Wolfsburg won their first German Bundesliga while Barcelona won the Spanish Liga.





European Cups 2008-2009

Barcelona are European Champions for the third time in their history, having defeated the defending champions Manchester United in the final. Meanwhile, Ukrainian club Shakhtyor Donetsk defeated Werder Bremen in in the U.E.F.A. Cup final.





2009 Copa Libertadores

Last year's champions LDU Quito were knocked out in the first round of the 2009 Copa Libertadores, which moves into the semi-finals.





Euro 2008

Spain are European champions after defeating Germany in Vienna to the score of a 1-0 and come away with their second all-time European championship. After breezing through the group stage, Spain had to contend with their nemesis Italy in the quarter-finals, whom they barely defeated on penalties. Upstarts Russia were up next, who has taken care of world-beaters the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. Just as in the group stage though, Spain handled them easily. Germany had a fairly straightforward path out of the group stage, setting up a thrilling quarter-final with high powered Portugal, followed by an amazing semi-final against the Turks.





2008 African Cup of Nations

Egypt have retained their African championship crown, their sixth title in the history of the tournament, the most of any nation. Hosts Ghana fell in the semi-finals to Cameroon, who in turn lost to Egypt in the final. Egypt Defeated powerhouse Ivory Coast in their semi-final.





2007 Copa America

Brazil are once again the champions of South America having won the 2007 Copa America. Just as in 2004, Argentina fell short to the Brazilians in the final. This is the eigth Copa America championship for Brazil, to go along with their five World Cup titles. Hosts Venezuela did well to reach the quarter finals before bowing out to Uruguay.





2008 Brazilian Championship

Sao Paulo are Brazilian champions for 2008, the sixth title for the club and third in a row.





2008 Argentina Apertura

Boca Juniors has won the first of two seasonal tournaments in Argentina, the Apertura. The competition ended in a three way tie after which a playoff was played, with Boca Juniors beating out Tigre and San Lorenzo.





World Cup 2006

Italy are world champions after defeating France in the final on penalty kicks, the match having ended in a 1-1 draw. This was Italy's fourth title, the other three coming in 1930, 1934, and 1982. France came close to winning their second title, but failed in the final's shootout in spite of being the better team. Italy's path to the final saw them breeze through their group, crushing the Czech Republic and Ghana, and drawing against the USA. Italy then faced Australia in the round of 16, needing a dubious injury time penalty to win, then faced surprise quarter-finalist Ukraine, and finally knocking out the home side Germany in extra time of the semi-finals. France struggled in their group, settling for draws against Switzerland and South Korea, and finally defeating Togo to advance. France then defeated high-flying Spain in the round-of-16, shocked Brazil in the quarters, and got by Portugal in the semis. Germany took third place, having knocked out Argentina in the quarter-finals.
