Euro 2008 |
|
-- Congratulations to European champions SPAIN --
June 29th: Spain are European champions after defeating Germany in Vienna to the score of a 1-0 and come away with their second all-time European championship.
June 25th: Spain crushed recent world-beaters Russia in Vienna to book a spot in the final against Germany, 3-0.
June 24th: Germany defeat Turkey in Basel in a thrilling semi-final 3-2 to book their place in the final.
June 22nd: Spain vanquished Italy on penalty kicks after playing to a scoreless draw in Vienna, they will play Russia in the semi-finals, who they defeated 4-1 in the first round.
June 21st: Basel saw Russia stun the high flying Dutch in extra time 3-1, in spite of giving up a late lead in regular time.
June 20th: Turkey made it two stunners in a row with a last minute comeback followed by a winning penalty shootout over Croatia in Vienna, setting up a semi-final showdown with Germany.
June 19th: Portugal and Germany kicked off the quarter-finals in Basel with an exciting match that ended in a 3-2 victory for the Germans.
June 18th: Needing only a draw to proceed to the quarter-finals, Sweden were dismantled by a motivated Russian team by the score of 2-0 in Innsbruck. Meanwhile a meaningless match between Spain and Greece ended in a 2-1 victory for the Spaniards in Salzburg, thus cementing their place as group winners.
June 17th: World champions Italy defeat France 2-0 in Zurich, and get much needed cooperation from a Dutch team with nothing to gain by beating Romania 2-0 in Berne, thus propeling Italy into the Quarter-finals where they will face Spain.
June 16th: Germany knock out Austria with a 1-0 victory in Vienna to book their place in the quarter-finals setting up a confrontation with Portugal. Meanwhile Croatia ended all hopes for Poland with a 1-0 win in Klagenfurt to make it 3 wins in 3 matches to set up a matchup with Turkey.
June 15th: Turkey made a stunning comeback to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, booking their place in the quarter-finals at the expense of the Czech Republic with a 3-2 victory in Geneva. Meanwhile, co-hosts Switzerland saved their honor with an emphatic 2-0 win over group winners Portugal in Basel.
June 14th: The defending champions Greece have been eliminated after two matches, falling to Russia 1-0 in Salzburg. Meanwhile Spain clinched the top place in group D with a last minute win over Sweden in Innsbruck.
June 13th: At least one of the World Cup finalists will not progress past the group stage. The Netherlands stunned France 4-1 in Berne thus winning the group outright, while Romania have put themselves in a very favorable position by snatching yet another draw against a titan, holding Italy to 1-1 in Zurich. A positive result for Romania against Holland will put them through regardless of how the much anticipated France v Italy match finishes, though even a draw and even a defeat could permutate to a spot in the quarter-finals.
June 12th: Croatia booked their place in the quarter-finals with a surprising win over Germany, while hosts Austria and Poland played to a 1-1 draw thus keeping both alive. Both teams will need to win their last match and count on the other not winning or ending up with a better goal difference.
June 11th: Switzerland suffered a heart-breaking last minute 2-1 defeat at the hands of Turkey, thus eliminating the hosts. Meanwhile Portugal clinched their place in the quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic, setting up a decisive match between the Czechs and the Turks for a place in the quarter-finals.
June 10th: Spain opened up in style with a 4-1 win over Russia while defending champs Greece were beaten 2-0 by Sweden. Every team has now played at least one match!
June 9th: France slumped to a 0-0 draw against Romania in Zurich, while world champions Italy were humiliated by the Netherlands 3-0 in Berne.
June 8th: Both hosts have now lost their opening matches as Austria lost to Croata 1-0 in Vienna, while pre-tournament favorites Germany opened in style with a 2-0 win over Poland in Klagenfurt.
June 7th: Co-hosts Switzerland suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Czech Republic in the opening match of the 2008 European Championship in Basel, while fellow group A team Portugal got off to a strong start with a 2-0 victory over Turkey in Geneva.

World Cup 2006 |
|
Italy are world champions after defeating France in the final on penalty kicks, the match
having ended in a 1-1 draw. This was Italy's fourth title, the other three coming in 1930,
1934, and 1982. France came close to winning their second title, but failed in the final's
shootout in spite of being the better team. Italy's path to the final saw them breeze through
their group, crushing the Czech Republic and Ghana, and drawing against the USA. Italy
then faced Australia in the round of 16, needing a dubious injury time penalty to win, then
faced surprise quarter-finalist Ukraine, and finally knocking out the home side Germany in
extra time of the semi-finals. France struggled in their group, settling for draws against
Switzerland and South Korea, and finally defeating Togo to advance. France then defeated
high-flying Spain in the round-of-16, shocked Brazil in the quarters, and got by Portugal
in the semis. Germany took third place, having knocked out Argentina in the quarter-finals.
